Hailing from Atlanta, GA Lots A Poppa went by the Name Little Julius before unleashing today’s absolute scorcher of a 45 on the world.
While listed as two sides and two songs this is basically one long track cut in two with side two writing credits going to Julius who definitely put his unique flavor into the song.
Born Julius High Jr. in Atlanta GA in 1935, he was baptized by Martin Luther King Jr, and sang in the Ebeneezer Baptist Church choir from the time he was a remarkably young five until his mid-20s. One second of listening to today’s 45 and nobody is going to have to tell you Julius had a background in gospel, this stuff is powerful!
Though his discography of 45′s is a little short Julius was a very active musician both in his home state of Georgia and on the road. He spent time on the road singing in Bobby “Blue” Bland’s band and it was touring with Dinah Washington and Sam Cooke in 1963 that Julius was given the nick name Lotsa Poppa.
Lots A-Poppa was managed by Huey P Meaux which despite his limited discography- in the case of his tour with Solomon Burke, the biggest name in Soul music at the time, he didn’t have anything released!- he was regularly on the road with the stars of the day. It helped that he was well regarded, even touring with artists he made a name for himself covering.
Lotsa Poppa was a mainstay at the Royal Peacock Lounge in Atlanta opening for James Brown, Ink Spots and Jimmy Reed and worked alongside the equally singular talent of Lee Moses.
Hope you enjoy this monster of a record.
Until next time,
-George / Snack Attack
