Sweet and Haunting Side from Bobby Copney

Bobby Copney – Love Au-Go-Go (Tuff, 1965)

Good day (or night) internet friends.  I hope this Monday isn’t making your life too difficult and the end of August (and Summer) has good things in store, today here at Musical Episode we surely do!

This is the only record I can find released by Copney though he does have a writing credit on another record released by Tuff in the same year, “Show Me” by Landy McNeil.

One listen to the soft, sweet, oozing soul of this song will prove that point.  The perfectly subtle organ acting as three beautiful back up singers but with, dare I say, even more expression than you’d probably get out of a group of people.  Throw in some tasteful horns and a very very understated rhythm section and you got yourself a masterpiece.  It’s actually worth point out how delicate of an arrangement this song has; while everything is in it’s place and does a great job Mr. Copney’s very delicate performance really carries the record to another level.  The Richard Tee credited on the label is the same brilliant Richard Tee who worked as a Motown session player and arranger and later worked out of New York as an arranger on a gazillion records.

Tuff was owned by Abner Spector who also is credited as the producer on today’s 45 along with a pretty extensive list of writing credits, including the hits “Smokey Places” by The Corvairs and “Sally Go ‘Round The Roses” by the Jaynettes both on his Tuff label. He was based out of Chicago though his work on Tuff which was in collaboration with the J&S label was out of New York.

I wish I had more biographical information to give you all on Mr. Copney and hope this wasn’t a one-and-done deal for Bobby.  I’ll hold onto hope there are more excellent records of his out there maybe under a different name or in a group somewhere.

Sorry things have been a little slow here, you know how life is!  Expect a few more posts in the coming week, I’m going to tee them up right now.

All the best,

-George / Snack Attack

PS, no idea who “Mildred” as penned on the label is but she had good taste!
