Righteous Side from Jersey’s The Superlatives

The Superlatives “We’re So Lonely” (Uptite, 1966)

This track can be found in “Singles Mixer Vol. 1”

Today’s record is a barn storming Jersey City vocal group The Superlatives and their B side “We’re So Lonely.”

The flip “I Still Love You” was at the time a big regional hit, with multiple pressings of this their only contemporary release and has since endured primarily in the Northern Soul scene.  While both are upbeat, the second side, despite being the lesser loved really stood out to me when I first heard this and not being familiar with either side. Goes to show you how good of an A&R guy I would have been…

Co-written by Jersey City man about town Paul Kyser who would work with a variety of other groups in a variety of capacities (Soul Generation, Kool and The Gang, Rhyze and many more) and produced by Industry vet Hal Wess at the Cameo-Parkway studios, this record was in the middle of a storm of east coast talent.  This Superlatives group is not to be confused with the Detroit Superlatives who made some great records in their own right.

Unfortunately there were some other recordings of theirs lost and this is the only 45 they released though you can hear them singing back-ups on Robbie Lawson’s “Burning Sensation.”

Hope you enjoy todays 45, until next time!
