Back with another Musical Episode! This week we have an hour of instrumental 45s leaning heavily on R&B inspired sounds so I hope you like some nice sax solos. A few favorites in this mix are the Twistin’ Kings, a name you may easily dismiss as a “twist” knock-off record but it’s actually a really funky, in-the-pocket side by the Motown house band The Funk Brothers under another name. There are two sides early in the mix by Florida born Noble “Thin Man” Watts that are ten years apart and show some of the changes that were happening for a bandleader.

Generally love any version of Wade in The Water and this version by the John Bishop Trio is no exception, Bishop was a guitarist with Ray Charles which explains why this is on his Tangerine label. The Church St. Five also deliver a cool instrumental version of Gary US Bonds’ “Quarter To Three” under the name A Night With Daddy G. The Daddy G in question is the bandleader Gene Barge who had a couple 45s on Chess but was the leader of the Legrande house band.

That’s all for now, hope you enjoy!

Peace,
-George / Snack Attack
