Update! I was just alerted by a listener that this podcast has an error- only the talking/hosting track showed and no music. It’ll take me a bit to get it all sorted and likely will have to start from scratch so check out another mix while we wait. I also wanted to emphasize after a helpful reminder from DJ Larsupreme that this podcast was meant to bring focus on a number of amazing singers and not to glorify or lionize the violent and dangerous behavior that was too common in James Brown’s relationship in particular with women.

Another Friday, another hour of 45s! This week is an hour of 45s from the James Brown Productions family tree with female leads. There’s a lot to choose from but I kept it generally in the 63-74 window which moves from the R&B influenced soul to his straight up hard hitting funk productions but without missing a couple of slower sides and less common sounds.
I don’t want to overlook that James Brown has a complicated legacy and was at times a difficult and unsafe person but I also don’t want to overshadow the incredible accomplishments of these singers or attach their legacy too definitely to the negative parts of the history. I hope the positive parts of the music and these wonderful women can be given an opportunity to shine for their incredible performances. A lot of the artists often have great, great recordings prior to and after working with Brown but I wanted to keep things organized because even with this limitation there’s way too much for an hour!
Hope you enjoy. For more records follow me on instagram @musicalepisode or don’t, just listen to some music in a nice chair.
Peace,
-George / Snack Attack
