Welcome to another Musical Episode! Things being what they are, I hope your new year is getting off to as good a start as possible and if you’re feeling a little down or stuck in the house maybe this mix will lift your spirits!
Today we’ve collected an hour of rockin’ soul for you all. Blue-eyed soul, a little northern soul and touches of garage all grace this mix and make it a listen I’ve come back to a few times (I’ve been pre-recording all these and scheduling the uploads ahead of time).
I’m fairly certain I’ve mentioned it before and definitely featured them but The Wildweeds track with the singing and songwriting of Al Anderson is a favorite, anything he touches whether it’s his long career in NRBQ or writing hits in Nashville later in his career he can do no wrong in my ears. I think part of why I like the Magic Lanterns track is it sounds like it’s pulled right from a Wildweeds session.
The Corvairs, Spellbinders and Jay and The Techniques songs are all great upbeat numbers that would be at home on any talc covered northern soul dancefloor.
Finally some cool instrumentals including the classic Turtles Buzz Saw, the cool b-side by The Tremeloes and the Yardbirds side.
Hoping the distribution of vaccines and improved treatments means someday we’ll be able to listen to these songs at our weekly soul night again some time this year. Hope you enjoy today’s mix and we’ll see you again next Friday for another hour of 45s!
Peace,
-George / Snack Attack
