Welcome back everyone for another hour of 45s! For today’s Musical Episode I dug into my Blues/R&B box to make up most of the mix. There are some slower numbers sprinkled in like Buster Benton’s “Spider In My Stew” and Ted Taylor’s exquisite “Days Are Dark” to give some balance to the upbeat tunes like Etta James’ early 45 “Tough Lover” which is as Fast and Furious as they get!

Muddy Waters at the 1966 Monterey Jazz Festival.

Lulu Reed and Freddie King each get a couple sides on here, Lulu has an incredible voice and for such a supremely talented and exciting performer it’s unfortunate she was never able to cross over, especially as soul emerged as a dominant and marketable force. She left the music industry after released on Chess, Federal and Tangerine but left us behind a decade of amazing singles, many with Freddie King. Freddie, for me, has one of the greatest guitar sounds and I pick up anything I can by him and I hope you can see why on these two sides.

Hope you enjoy today’s mix and we’ll see you again soon!
