One of the main functions of this blog is basically personal, I like to spend a little extra time with individual records; researching, putting together biographical information from what few details I can find and appreciating as best I can each 45′s time and place. Many of these records aren’t regular dinner conversation and I like giving them a little bit of real estate in our world yet they’re also not terribly rare so I have no delusions that I’m saving these songs from being forever lost or forgotten.
That being said, my time is limited and there are lots of great resources to learn about music out there so I try to highlight songs that are particularly important to me and don’t have extensive wikipedia entries written about the artist. Still, I DJ a soul night every week and I am regularly approached by people excitedly asking about records that, to me, are either cornerstones of the genre, soul staples, well known samples or common/inexpensive 45s. Or all the above. So I got to thinking about the importance of mentioning other records. Songs that are remarkable, memorable, heavy, significant, unique, etc but don’t register on my “overlooked” radar.
Basically, I need to appreciate that some people spend a little less time with this music than I do which leads us to today’s post and (hopefully) many more in the future.
With that, our inaugural “Snack Attack’s Classics!” is Lonnie Mack’s “Chicken’ Pickin’“ Lonnie is a legendary guitarist and rightfully so, his breakout hit Memphis was a landmark record that rivals Link Wray in influence and he stuck around with his trademark Flying V guitar blowing minds to this day. Today’s 45 is dirt cheap and should be in everyone’s crate; one listen will reveal why. No, your turntable is not set to 78, Lonnie is just absolutely shredding.
