Musical Episode #077 : Live Wires! An Hour of Upbeat 45s

New York City’s Johnny and The Expressions are featured on todays mix of upbeat sides with their classic “Where Is The Party.” Only releasing three 45s in 1966 they nevertheless left behind a memorable body of work featuring Johnny’s (third from Left) distinctive falsetto. Members Ralph Weeks and Sinclair Drayton on Johnny’s left and right respectively were Panamanian with Ralph continuing on to make more Latin oriented sides with Ralph and The Telecasters.

Afternoon everyone, hope you’re doing well and if you’re not that this mix gives you the little jump start needed. Whenever I’m doing a gig spinning 45s I always bring my case with three rows that probably fits 350 records in it. When all is said and done I probably play 50-60 records total. As a habit from when I was dj’ing weekly for years I always separate and file the records I’ve already plays so I could easily take them out and not play them again for a while to keep things fresh. Well, after my last gig I realized I don’t play about 80% of the records I pulled so I thought I would put together some of the ones I didn’t play into a mix as a sort of encore set to keep the party going.

As such, all these records are pretty upbeat, I chose a lot with a more Northern Soul vibe to keep the mix cohesive though it definitely moves around a bit. There are a bunch of favorites in here including The Magic Tones side which is an incredible side of crisp and punchy Detroit soul, with members who would go on to play in The Undisputed Truth. The Four Tops side is a very common record but that doesn’t change how much I love it! I picked the vocal side of the Cliff Nobles record, even though The Horse was the hit I have a soft spot for the vocal side. The Isley Brothers side is incredible and is just before the left Motown for good to relaunch their T-Neck label in earnest. You can hear the fuzz starting to creep to the front of the mix on that track. Lots more great stuff in the mix and think you’ll agree.

I hope you enjoy the mix and you’ll be hearing from me again soon!

Peace,

-George / Snack Attack
