Musical Episode #064 : Girl Group Sound v.5

The Bobbettes, one of the many great groups of voices featured on today’s podcast of “girl group” sounds!

It’s February and properly icy, snowy and cold here in the Northeast which makes it a bit harder, along with a very hectic work schedule, to spend a lot of time in my cold basement record room but I was excited about a couple records I got in over the past couple months- The Orchids “Good Good Time” and The Clickettes “Lone Lover”- and wanted to put together another mix of records that loosely fits that “girl group sound,” at least in my mind.

This collection of 45s is mostly from the early 60’s and features mostly singing groups though there are some early and later records, some solo efforts and records that could easily be categorized differently but I’m not trying to write a definitive guide with these podcasts, really just collecting some of the records I enjoy listening and sharing hoping you will too.

The Bobbettes (pictured above) deliver an incredible side after their time with Atlantic and the success of Mr. Lee was apparently not going to be replicated but they still had tons of great music in them including this side which has a roughness to it I just adore. Brenda and The Tabulations, hailing from Philly and from their first recordings, deliver a side is definitely a bit more soulful and sweet sounding but gosh is it wonderful! Same goes for Baby Washington’s side (here under her name Justine) “I Can’t Wait Until I See My Baby’ much more of a sweet, brooding soul side but it felt good in the mix and fit the mood for me and hope you’ll agree.

There’s no chance I’ll be able to keep the podcast weekly or even regular with work- this one only got done because of a snow day!- but I do hope to keep them coming as I’m able and hope you continue to check them out. I know it’s been rough out there and hope everyone is able to find some peace and joy in their relationships and time with art, especially while we’re unable (at least up here) to be outside much.

Peace,

-George / Snack Attack
