The incredibly talented Denise LaSalle is the heart of today’s mix of mid-tempo soul.

End of another week that felt like a horrible decade as we move into the hardest parts of winter here in New England, rather than getting acquainted, the cold of February usually hits the hardest and it doesn’t help that the insecurity of the world grows daily. In the same way I appreciate the four season and the change that comes with it, I hope we see some positive shifts in the world ahead. Here’s some music to help get you through.

Today’s mix is a nice collection of mid-tempo soulful sides, nothing too funky and nothing too deep, the porridge is just right if you ask me.

The center of the mix is a couple of sides by the marvelous and talented Denise LeSalle who can not only sing so beautiful but wrote her songs and worked on the business end with her Crajon production company. Denise had a number of hits over the years which Trapped By A Thing Called Love was the first.

The magical Roberta Flack

Keeping the lights dim and the mood mellow the instrumental side by The Jazz Crusaders is a melodic, swaying side that goes well with Roberta Flack’s romantic mood. The Big Ella (aka Kim Tolliver) record is such a good one and a slow burn that I played both sides. The song is (frustratingly) the best right in the middle when it fades out and back in.

Only other note is the thankfully issued 45 by George Jackson of his unreleased recordings of his own compositions from the early 70s. Lots of people did right by his songs but his versions are so so good, I’m really happy to have them on 45.

Hope you enjoy this mix and we’ll see you next week for another podcast.

Peace,
-George / Snack Attack
